What to do right now

If glass just broke, slow down and make the area safe first. This is general information only, not safety or legal advice. Broken glass can cause serious cuts. If someone is hurt, get first aid or call the local emergency number first.

1. Keep people and pets away from the area.
2. Put on shoes or sturdy slippers. If you have them, use gloves.
3. Pick up large pieces carefully. Use a broom and dustpan for small pieces.
4. Put broken glass in a thick bag or wrap it well before placing it in the trash.
5. If a window or door opening is exposed, keep the area closed off and, if you can do so safely, cover it temporarily until a licensed glass pro can look at it.

What it may cost

Glass repair costs vary a lot. The real number depends on the glass type and thickness, the size, the edge work, and your area. A single-pane window glass swap is often less than a failed insulated double-pane unit, and tempered or laminated safety glass usually costs more than basic annealed glass. These ranges are general information only — not quotes.

Many small residential glass jobs may fall somewhere around $150 to $500. A double-pane insulated glass unit often lands higher, sometimes around $250 to $700 or more. Shower door glass, sliding door glass, custom mirrors, and thick tabletops can cost more, especially if the glass is large, tempered, polished, or custom-cut.
